Upping The Aunty – Opening Reception

May 31, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

UPPING THE AUNTY is a new series of eight large-scale acrylic on canvas paintings byMeera Sethi that celebrate the iconic South Asian aunty,

These works reference Sethi’s internationally-featured street style aunty photo blog launched in early 2014. In South Asian culture, an aunty may or may not be a biological relation. She may be a friend of the family or a stranger. Neither your mother, nor part of your peer group, aunties may be trusted confidantes or gatekeepers of social decorum.

These intricate new paintings flip the script on assumptions about style and femininity. Documenting fashion phenomenon such as sneakers with a sari, the new works exaggerate markers of aunty style in bold colour and pattern. The project challenges dominant narratives of immigrant and diasporic communities, street style and popular fashion.

This is the first solo exhibition of a much-loved project that has been featured on NBC, NPR, and Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls.  Come see what all the fuss is about – and bring your aunty along!

Opening Reception: May 31st, 6:00pm to 9:00pm
