Vanguardia Dance Festival 2019

Vanguardia Dance Festival is thrilled to present a week of extended activities in it’s
5 th bi-annual edition showcasing a curated selection of interdisciplinary dance performances,
workshops, panel discussions, and video dance screenings. In partnership with the Native Earth
Performing Arts, the festival will take place from April 2nd to 6th , 2019 at the Aki Studio. This year,
the festival celebrates the artistic conversations between Latinx choreographers and diverse
artists from different origins and artistic approaches.

Presenting artists: Artists: Mateo Galindo Torres, Robyn Macdonald, charles c smith, Norma Araiza, Julieta Maria, Diana López, Caitlin McNannus, Charissa Wilcox, Coman Poon, Edgardo Moreno, Olga Barrios. And special international guest, dance artist Ximena Monroy representing the dance video
artist collective, “Agite y Sirva Festival Itinerante de Video” will premiere a series of dance films in Toronto featuring artists from different parts of Latin America.

The event will feature live performances from local artists in Toronto. Local minority-owned businesses will also be present to network and to showcase their products/services and support other local businesses who are attending.
The event will be located at Daniel’s Spectrum in Regent Park. The doors will open at 5:00pm where local businesses will have the floor to show their products and services. Attendees are encouraged to network and converse with the local business representatives. The live performances will start at 6:30pm.

Sounds From The 6ix allows the voices of racialized communities to be heard within a supportive and positive environment. A portion of ticket sales will be donated to helping youth in performing arts!

About the Journey

The Journey is a spirited musical based on the story of three young people living in the Regent Park neighbourhood. Be electrified and transformed by this unique performance presented at Daniels Spectrum in Regent Park.

Using a powerful combination of spoken word, dramatic scenes, music and dance, The Journey highlights moments in Regent Park’s nearly 70-year history through the eyes of local residents.

Free Tickets!

FREE tickets for the performance on Friday, November 18 are available for people who live and/or work in Regent Park. The free tickets are available for pick-up at ticket centres while quantities last. Tickets will not be available at the door.

Tickets are only available in advance on November 1 until all tickets are claimed at the following times and locations:

  • 12 PM – 4 PM @ Daniels Spectrum Artscape Office (585 Dundas St E, Toronto, ON M5A 2B7)
  • 5 PM – 8 PM @ Regent Park Community Centre (402 Shuter St, Toronto, ON M5A 1X6)

Each person may claim up to 4 tickets.

There’s more to our special community presentation than just the show! Come to Daniels Spectrum early for a free pre-show reception at 6PM with snacks, refreshments and live music, and stay after the show for a free buffet at 9:15 PM for ticket holders.

Meet the Cast

Britta B, Trevlyn K, Steve Harmony

 

Not only is The Journey inspired by the real-life stories of Regent Park residents, it also features award-winning Regent Park spoken word artists Trevlyn Kay and Britta B, with R&B singer-songwriter Steve Harmony, Regent Park School of Music graduate Stacy Darko and Dixon Hall Music School alumnus Thompson Egbo-Egbo.

 

Jackie Robertson and Jeremiah Sparks

 

Joining these local talents on-stage is the electrifying, award-winning, world-class performer Jackie Richardson (‘The Nina Project,’ ‘Adventures of a Black Girl in Search of God’), in addition to vocalist, actor and musician Jeremiah Sparks (Mufasa in ‘The Lion King,’ and star of world renowned show ‘Drum’) and songstress/actress Alana Bridgewater (Dragon in the stage production of ‘Shrek’ and Motormouth in the Broadway hit ‘Hairspray’ at the Charlottetown Festival). The Journey will tug at your heartstrings and leave you wanting more.

The Journey: A Living History of the Regent Park Revitalization, Community Performance Sweepstakes, Official Contest Rules

1) HOW TO ENTER

The Journey: A Living History of the Regent Park Revitalization Community Performance Sweepstakes (“the Contest”) is open to all persons with a valid ticket to the community performance of The Journey Regent Park (“the Community Performance”) and who are present at the time of the draw on Friday, November 18, 2016. Winners will be drawn at random immediately before the Community Performance at approximately 7:30 PM.

2) ELIGIBILITY

The Contest is open to individuals who reside in Canada (excluding Quebec) that hold a valid ticket to the Community Performance. Winners must be present and present their winning ticket at the time of the draw to claim their prize or they forfeit their claim and a new winner will be drawn at random.

Employees and representatives of (i) Artscape (the “Contest Sponsor”) and (ii) its advertising and promotional agencies, affiliated corporations and other persons, firms or corporations involved in the development or execution of this Contest, are not eligible to enter or win a prize in this Contest.

3) THE DRAW

The draw will be held on Friday, November 18, 2016 at approximately 7:30 PM.  The winner will be drawn at random from tickets received from the community performance audience at the door. Odds of winning are dependent on the number of eligible entries received.

4) THE PRIZES

Prizes must be accepted as awarded and no substitution of the prize is permitted nor will any cash equivalent will be paid.

5) ENTRY CONDITIONS
